From Psychedelic rock to Mexican folk, R&B and alternative albums such as I got dem Ol’Kozmic Blues Again Mama by Janis Joplin and Musas by Natalia Lafourcade, Mama’s Gun by Erykah Badu and Blue Banisters By Lana del Rey give the feeling of fall.
I got dem Ol’ kozmic Blues Again Mama, is an album dropped September 11,1969 with songs like “Maybe” incorporating strong brass instruments, allowing for jazz to be conveyed through Joplin’s music intensifying feelings and simulations of Fall. The melancholy and sorrow in her voice along with her ability to reach high notes gives the sentiment of change coming.
Sorrow, love and a lot of R&B is what Mama’s Gun by Erykah Badu defines.
This could single handedly be the album that represents Black love in the movements of revolution and change. The color scheme represents crunchy leaves and early sunsets, which is what majorly screams late fall. “Green eyes” is a single from this album, which goes through the stages of grief amidst a breakup which Badu represented through time periods interpreted by the melody.
The death of a music genre has been brought back and transformed by songwriter, Natalia Lafourcade. Her album, Musas, released in 2017 incorporates sounds of acoustic guitar, flute, ukulele etc. “Tu si sabes quererme” & “Soy lo Prohibido” are both about one’s feelings of long lasting love. “Tu si sabes quererme” is a fast paced song similar to the feeling of late september/ early October, when the weather is changing, while “Soy lo Prohibido” is the climax of fall’s slow and thoughtful ballad.
Melancholy and life reflections is what Lana del rey conveyed through her 8th studio album Blue Banisters. Fall is the season where we all reflect about our year and the change before winter takes over. This album contains songs that speak on the relationship between a child and their parents, body image, heart break all intertwined with jazz. “Nectar of the gods”, “Black bathing suit”, “If you lie down with me” and “Thunder” are perhaps the best songs in the album. The song “If you lie down with me” speaks to listeners in a way similar to “Maybe” by Janis Joplin, which instead uses a slow track towards the end of the song incorporating saxophones.
