Movie review: Coming 2 America
The movie Coming 2 America is a new American comedy movie that was released in 2021. It is a sequel to the older movie that was released in 1988. This film was directed by Craig Brewer and produced by Kevin Misher and Eddie Murphy, who also starred in the film. Being that the very first film was such a hit, the sequel was also very exciting to watch.
While the original movie was about the prince of Zamunda searching in America to find true love, the sequel was about the now King returning to America to find his son Lavelle. He had no knowledge of her and once he eventually dies when taking the throne.
In this movie there were many scenes of women empowerment, like fighting scenes and scenes about changing the law for women and men to be equal which I really enjoyed. Not only did it have women empowerment but it had a lot of scenes about racial equality.
After the prince went to Zumanda he found love, but was being forced to marry someone from a different kingdom who he was not in love with, similar to the original movie. On a good note, the king was understanding he let them marry and have a very happy ending.
Although this movie was absolutely hilarious and uplifting, the movie had too many plots. Which made it seem very scattered, in my opinion there was just way too much going on like; becoming a prince, uniting kingdoms, women empowerment, finding love, and more. I didn’t like that aspect of the movie much because it felt like they were touching base on too many subjects.
Another thing I didn’t enjoy was a certain scene that kind of rubbed me the wrong way. To show how king Azeem had a son he wasn’t aware of, they told a story of how when he went to America searching for love and in the process he was raped. In the scene he was drugged and had intercourse with a woman. This scene was presented very comically however, I know that if the roles were reversed and it was the women under the influence and not the man, this would have been a completely different story. This was very much overlooked and made it more of a funny matter rather than a serious one, more so because this is glorified for men. Rape is rape, whether it is a man getting raped or a women getting raped, and it shouldn’t be turned into a funny matter.
Other than that this new movie is very funny and entertaining, I really enjoyed it and would definitely recommend it to anyone who has seen the first one. I don’t normally laugh out loud to movies, but for this one I did.
I loved watching all of the amazing famous actors such as Eddie Murphy, Shari Headley, Wesley Snipes, Leslie Jones, Teyana Taylor, Jermaine Fowler, John Amos, James Earl Jones, Micheal Blackson, and so many more. It’s amazing to see all of these recognized actors and actresses. African Americans are seen in a positive light and also to see a country of Africa in a positive and wealthy way rather than seeing poverty, which is the way many people think. I would definitely recommend this movie to anyone looking for a new movie to watch.
