After years of rumors and speculation, a Space Jam sequel looks like it’s finally happening. Director Justin Lin, best known for his Fast & Furious movies, has started writing a Space Jam 2 script, which is speculated to feature a LeBron James-led cast, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The classic original film that released back in 1996 starred NBA legend Michael Jordan and the Looney Tunes cartoon crew. In the movie, Jordan and the Tune Squad go against the “Monstars,” who stole the talents of basketball players Charles Barkley, Shawn Bradley, Patrick Ewing, Larry Johnson and Muggsy Bogues, leaving them unable to play.

The movie received tons of positive feedback, it grossed approximately $90.4 million in the United States, became the third highest-grossing sports film of all time. It also became a classic film for children all over the world.

“Space Jam was one of my favorite movies when I was little and inspired me to become more into basketball,” senior Shank Rai said.

The plot for Space Jam 2 is currently unknown, but expect for the sequel to feature a similar storyline. James is anticipated to tag along a handful of NBA stars with him, like how Jordan did. Rumored players to star in the film include; Blake Griffin, Kyrie Irving, J.R. Smith, Carmelo Anthony and more.

While mostly everyone loved the first Space Jam film, the rumored sequel has received tons of mixed opinions. Many think making a sequel will ruin the Space Jam legacy, while others are excited to see James with the Tune Squad. A huge factor why the film might flop is because the Looney Tunes aren’t as relevant today as they were back in 1996. It’s also pretty hard to impress kids with a cartoon movie nowadays, and with LeBron’s acting skills, it may be even harder.
