The Jersey Shore gone, New York City flooded and almost $70 billion worth of damage. Super storm Sandy devastated the east coast on Oct. 25 leaving millions still without power or homes.
On Dec. 12, streaming over hundreds of different television and radio channels, the 12/12/12 Concert for Sandy Relief at Madison Square Garden began. Lasting over five hours, the concert featured some of the greatest musicians; Bruce Springsteen, Eric Clapton, Bon Jovi, Dave Grohl, The Rolling Stones, Eddie Vedder, Alicia Keys, Roger Waters, The Who, Paul McCartney and more.
“My favorite part was The Rolling Stones, because they are an inspiration,” junior Noah Wolfenstein said.
Multiple artists performing were New Jersey or New York-born, and told stories about growing up in some of the places that were hit heavily by Sandy. They encouraged viewers to call in or go online to donate.
All money donated would go to the Robin Hood Relief Fund. The fund has insured that all money raised will go directly to non-profit groups to help rebuild the damage.
An incentive for viewers to call in to donate was having celebrities answer the phones. Halfway through the concert, hosts announced $50 million had already been made. However, the final amount donated has not been released yet.
Highlights from the concert included actor Adam Sandler’s rewrite of the song “Hallelujah,” changing the chorus to “Hallelujah, Sandy screw ya, we’ll get through ya, cause we’re New Yorkers.” Another highlight was Nirvana reuniting for the first time since Kurt Cobain’s death, with Paul McCartney as their front-man.
“My favorite was Paul McCartney because he was a part of The Beatles and he always puts on a good show,” senior Joey Rainey said.
