We talked with Alexandria based band The Good Fight to get an inside look at their band, and what’s to come in the future.
Q: Introduce yourself and your position in the band
- Tom Kelly- Lead Vocals
- Eli Fiorillo- Guitar
- Ben Conner- Guitar
- Tyler Robinson- Bass/Back up Vocals
- Spencer Mallinson-Drums
Q: How and when did the band form?
The band actually formed in November of 2010 by Tom and his best friend Sebastian with some songs we don’t play anymore. We had a different line up then with Tom on drums, Eli on bass, and Ben in the same place he’s always been, shredding on our hollow body guitars. We broke up in November of that year, then reformed in March of 2011 with different members and all new songs, and Tom jumped back on board in April as the lead singer.
Q: Living in a strong music scene, do you feel as if its helped or hurt you as a band?
We feel that the local scene doesn’t have a huge place for the style of music we’re pursuing, but that’s not gonna stop us from doing what we love. We plan on playing out of town more often then not, and are currently working on finding a trailer to help us in those endeavors.
Q: If you had to pick one song for someone to listen to, who’s never heard your music before, which song would you suggest?
We would definitely suggest “I’m a Goddamn Marvel of Modern Science” out of the songs we currently have recorded. It’s fast, in your face, and has a lot going on with vocals, and lead guitar, so were pretty proud of it.
Q: What bands would you relate your sound too?
We get compared to The Wonder Years a lot, which is rad because we all love them, but we also like to include New Found Glory and Handguns. We try hard not to sound too much like anyone, which isn’t realistic, but we add a lot of elements to give us a unique pop punk sound.
Q: Where does the inspiration for your lyrics come from?
When I first joined the band, I had 7 weeks to write lyrics for 8 songs, because we had a show in Roanoke,VA booked, and no lyrics. I hesitate to call it luck, but luckily at the same time I joined the band, my girlfriend ran off with another guy so I had a lot to write about. It wasn’t all just about her though. That overwhelming amount of emotion over the break up was able to be projected on other subjects as well, and I got a lot of work done in those few weeks. Themes of home, friends, and heartbreak are reoccurring in many of our songs. Tyler and Ben are also very crucial in the lyric writing process. We have entire songs written by the 2 of them now, and I have collaborated with Ben, Eli, and Tyler on songs as well.
Q: How do you guys do your recordings?
Tom does everything in his apartment. Luckily Eli and Tom both went/are going to school for recording, so were getting away with some amazing/recordings.
Q: What’s some advice you could give to a high school musician?
Never stop making music. We were all in bands in high school and it was the highlight of all of our 4 years. Even if it never turns into anything, nothing is better than making music with your best friends.
Q: Do you have any plans for an album/new songs?
We are releasing our debut EP “Just Break Up With Her” DEFINITELY by the end of this year. We’ve been working on it for over 6 months and its about damn time we finish it up. Writing for the full length is already about half done, and we’re very eager for our fans, friends, and family to hear what we’ve been working so hard on.
Q: Anything else you’d like our viewers to know?
Never take your music scene for granted. Go to shows just to hear and appreciate music, regardless of who’s playing. The bands you want to see, whether local or major headlining bands will only play at your local venue if its a thriving place.
