From the beginning it is apparent the father-son relationship between Patterson’s character, Tyler Hawkins, and his father, John Hawkins played by Pierce Brosnan are uneasy. The family is sitting at lunch while young sister, Caroline Hawkins, played by Ruby Jerins, talks about her art. The father then interrupts and changes the subject, causing great tension and frustration between him and Patterson. This strained relationship is seen throughout the film.
Patterson’s roommate and friend, Aiden Hall played by Tate Ellington, convinces him to go partying. After an incident the police arrive. Ellington and Patterson are free until Patterson mouths off causing him to get thrown on the car by police chief, Kevin McCarthy and arrested.
Patterson is then bailed out by his rich, successful father. “Could do worse than have a father who bails you out of jail,” says Brosnan. “I don’t wanna be bailed out of anything,” Patterson replied showing how he did not need his father.
The following day Ellington sees McCarthy who had arrested them the night before drop off his daughter. He tells Patterson to introduce himself to her and mess around with her a little. At first Ally, played by Emilie de Ravin tries to scare him off but then surprisingly falls for his charm.
Patterson’s character is perfectly captured through his moody acting and dramatic scenes. On the contrary Ravin’s acting is dull and strange, making it hard to relate to her character. But what was undeniable was the passionate chemistry between the two.
What started off as a bet turned into a blossoming relationship between Patterson and Ravin. She seems to be an inspiration to him and helps him in healing his wounds. One night Ravin comes home late and tempers fly with her father, McCarthy, when he suddenly hits her. She later appears in Patterson and Ellington’s apartment.
As the movie continues their relationship grows stronger as they face their life struggles.
An unexpected turn happens towards the end which took the audience by surprise.
The movie finishes with Patterson saying “If you could hear me, I would say that our finger prints don’t fade from the lives we’ve touched.’
