Each month it seems like a new technological advance is sweeping across America. With a new iPod coming out each year and more advanced phones taking over the shelves every month it is hard to stay on top of things. The past ten years technology has really boomed and taken over American’s everyday lives.
It seems like centuries ago that people used C.D. players and walkman in order to listen to music. People used to carry around a case of C.D.’s and make mix tapes, now you only need a handheld mp3 player with a good playlist on it. It seems as though Americans have been living this way forever, but iPods were only invented in 2001.
The first iPod created was black and white and did not even have a scroll wheel. It was also bulky and did not have a great battery life. Each year however Apple progressed creating sleeker, smaller, and more efficient iPods. They changed the way people listened to music and the way entertainers sold their music. Instead of going out to a store to buy a C.D, customers only have to click a button on ITunes and they have the song they want.
Cell phones have changed quite a bit since they were first invented in 1973. They used to be big and the only use for it was to make phone calls. Caller ID was not added on until 1994 and texting was not a feature until 1995. Today many people hardly even use their cell phone to call someone, they use it to text. Texting has become a large part of the American society and has changed the way of communication completely.
Today there are hundreds of different kinds of cell phones; flip, slide, touch screen, PDA, and more. There are also a ton of features on cell phones including cameras, music players, navigation systems, internet, email and more. In the last decade cell phones have greatly progressed becoming more and more advanced as each year goes on. More people use cell phones as well with kids as young as elementary school owning one.
Perhaps one of the greatest advances in technology is the internet and the way people use it. Before the internet was created people had to go to the library to do research rather than typing their topic into Google which would give them over a hundred websites of information. People had to read the newspaper, listen to the radio, or watch the news in order to stay updated on the current events. Today the most popular source of news is on the internet.
The internet also changed the way people communicate. Instead of sending a letter to an old friend all you have to do is go onto Facebook, MySpace, or Twitter to see how they are doing. Many celebrities are using Twitter and MySpace in order to connect with their fans. People are even finding fame through their YouTube and MySpace account.
The recent surge in technology has changed the way people live their lives. It has completely changed the way people communicate and listen to music.
