Every year during the Annual Art show, an artist in different art categories such as 3D Art, Studio Art, Animation and etcetera is awarded a Principal Award. The award signifies Principal DeRose’s favorite piece of art.
Out of many talented artists, one of various winners of this year’s annual art show was sophomore Elena Nazario. Nazario provided an animation showcasing the significance of her hair used as a way to express herself throughout her life and her mother’s support.
In the animation, a transformation is animated by the swift movement of a paintbrush. With each brush stroke it reveals Nazario’s animated character’s hair in a different hairstyle.
“I named the animation “A Colorful Canvas”, referring to my hair as a “canvas” because typically it is not viewed that way, but I was allowed to dye my hair any color, any way (within reason, of course) and wear it whatever length,” said Nazario. “Because of this, my hair has become an important part of my identity, especially because it is something that still makes me happy.”
Starting the animation project around mid-November, Nazario planned out her animation process through brainstorming and animation practice, allowing her to finish in a few weeks with a working time of four hours per week.
When presented the award the next day of the art show, it took Nazario a moment to register, previously not knowing there would be awards.
“To me, the award holds so much more weight because I’ve seen everyone’s animations, so I know everyone in that class is extremely talented and just as deserving of recognition.” said Nazario.
