Holocaust survivor Henry Greenbaum will be coming to AHS today during ATOM Time to speak to students about his experiences in several concentration camps. The event will be held in the auditorium.
Greenbaum was born in Starachowice, Poland, on April 1, 1928. He was shot in the head while attempting to escape from a labor camp in 1943 with his sister, Faige, but survived the injury. Greenbaum was placed in the Auschwitz camp, and as the Soviet Union approached he was transferred to Flossenburg, a concentration camp near the Czechoslovakian border. Greenbaum was then sent on a death march to Dachau due to the American forces approaching the Flossenburg camp. He was freed in 1945 by U.S. soldiers from the 11th Armored Division.
Greenbaum then began to search for his family and eventually reunited with his two brothers and one sister that also survived. They settled in New York. He is currently living in Bethesda, Maryland with his wife and four children, twelve grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.
